Spelling

Students review and learn sound-letter associations.
They practice auditory discrimination of beginning, middle, and ending
sounds, and learn to write those letters to complete words. After the
letters and their sounds are reviewed, students are given a word list each
week. Students memorize these words, hopefully using the phonetic
rules where they apply. Our spelling is part of our reading program.
As children learn to spell during this stage they invent spellings freely
and this helps them apply their growing phonetic knowledge to the spelling
system. During creative writing they will often be encouraged to spell
on their own.
