Literature In 7th and 8th grade literature, we use the Prentice-Hall Literature series which covers a variety of literature genres. The classes also read several novels including The Outsiders, and That Was Then, This is Now, Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, Tom Sawyer, Across Five Aprils, Holes, Animal Farm and The Giver. This year we've added the novel: Sevek and the Holocaust: The Boy who Refused to Die by Sidney Finkel, a real life survivor of the Holocause. A visit from Mr. Finkel is planned in the spring. Along with the vocabulary and reading comprehension skill builders, we also spend time discussing selected readings as a class as well as in small groups. Daily Oral Language exercises are also a part of our classroom curriculum. The students learn to recognize common grammatical errors made in everyday language. Accelerated Reader is used in the 7th and 8th grade as an incentive for pleasure reading. The students have a goal of 10 points per quarter.
